A massive bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the calendar year.

The winning offer for the 535-pound fish was submitted by the parent firm of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which operates locations across the country and abroad.

"The year's tuna signals a prosperous start," commented the company president, a familiar bidder at the annual new year's auction.

Dubbed the King of Tuna, this entrepreneur is famous for making substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these auspicious new year auctions.

Auction Surprise and Record-Setting Precedent

After the auction, the winner informed journalists that he was "surprised at the amount," noting, "I expected we would be able to purchase it a little for less, but the price soared rapidly."

This new purchase exceeds his previous record purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Even after previously remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to shatter his own record another time.

A Tradition of High Prices

The opening auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously characterized by sky-high prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by another food company, which indicated the fish would be served at its locations throughout the country.

The frenetic energy at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a major tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

From Auction to Plate

The multi-million-dollar tuna was quickly sliced up for diners at the winner's sushi chains shortly after the auction was finished.

"I believe like I've begun the year in a auspicious way after eating something so auspicious as the year gets underway," said one elated patron.
