Celebratory Displays along with a Cheer for Life: Israeli Citizens Rejoice at Deal Bringing Back Hostages
The declaration regarding a deal projected to lead to the freeing of hostages held within Gaza for more than 24 months has generated joy and relief across the nation.
A group that has advocated for the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza expressed “profound gratitude” for what it called a “landmark achievement”.
The deal—which still must be approved by the Israeli war cabinet—involves the release of 20 living hostages and the bodies of 28 dead hostages in exchange for 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences in Israeli prisons and 1,700 detainees from the Gaza region.
So far, 148 hostages have come back—largely through previous ceasefire deals—51 sets of remains have been retrieved while eight hostages were freed by rescue.
Jubilant Scenes at Hostages Square
Joyous gatherings took place in Hostages’ Square located in Tel Aviv with crowds of individuals assembled before the agreement’s signing.
The gathering began clapping and moving to music under American and Israeli banners—one woman displaying a placard that read: “We love Trump.”
“It’s a magical day,” she expressed.
A different person, 50-year-old Yael, wept while observing the crowd dancing.
“I am thrilled—it’s such a relief,” she said. “We must witness them come back home to their families.”

Families Celebrate with Fireworks
The mother and sister of Israeli hostage Matan Zangauker set off fireworks in celebration of the news of his impending homecoming.
“They are returning!... Matan is coming home!” Einav Zangauker said as she held her child.
Viki Cohen, the parent of Israeli hostage Nimrod Cohen, shared online: “My son, you are returning home.”
The delight was palpable in the streets of Tel Aviv after the announcement.
Freed Hostages Say Prayers and Toasts
Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari celebrated with another freed hostage Romi Gonen, uttering blessings of thankfulness, then toasting “To life”, which means “for life”. She has advocated for the release of her friends, the Berman twins Gali and Ziv.
Their brother Liran Berman wrote: “My Gali and Ziv, I love you so much. You are coming back.”
The cousin of Gil Dickman Carmel Gat was captured in October 2023, and her body recovered from a tunnel in Gaza nearly a year after. He has been joining other hostage families in pushing for an agreement that brings the homecoming of everyone still being held in Gaza.
“I can’t quite believe this is actually happening. We have waited for such a long time and now it’s here,” he said.
He stated he was “shattered” that Carmel would not be among those returning home but was “glowing with joy” for the relatives of the hostages who are finally returning.
Eitan Horn was seized from kibbutz Nir Oz in Israel’s south together with his sibling.
Cautious Optimism from Relatives
Dalia Cusnir, whose brother-in-law Eitan Horn remains captive in Gaza, said she experienced like she was living “a dream state”.
“We are immensely thankful to the President and everything he has accomplished for us. We feel like it might be the beginning of the end of this ordeal, and hugging Eitan seems nearer than ever,” she said.
However, she warned that it was still too soon to celebrate.
“Before the final captive is here, we’re not opening the champagne. We will continue struggling... until the end,” she said.
“So many things might occur up to the final instant which is why we are extremely cautious. We simply wish to thank everyone who was involved in the efforts and ensure this deal is finalized... We shall rejoice only when the last captive is back home.”
Eitan was taken from Nir Oz kibbutz in southern Israel together with his sibling Iair, who was freed from detainment through a truce agreement earlier this year.
