‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s road from gurney to goals with Athletic Bilbao
Whenhe first time Gorka Guruzeta competed in England, an teenage appearing for Athletic Bilbao B against German opponents at Adams Park in the 2015 season, he found the net. During his subsequent match he appeared in the country, against the English side weeks after, he netted. His third outing, against Pep Guardiola’s team soon after, well, he scored again. Upon his comeback to the city to face United at Leigh’s ground in the 2017 season, he scored again. An excellent finish, as well. “Actually,” he remarks, “it ranks among my finest I’ve netted.” So Athletic did what they had to do: he was replaced.
“I was furious,” the attacker admits, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. We went to play United and I was pretty good. They kept me out of the final 45 minutes: I was without a signed agreement, I was scoring goals, there were lots of rumours, you know how it is. I’m unsure regarding interest from Newcastle, but I recall seeing about Man United, the typical thing. I have no idea if it was accurate, but had they contacted me, my desire was to remain at Athletic. I feel lucky to be here.”
Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash
At the facility, Bilbao, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; following that, the short journey to the airport and another trip to England, on this occasion to face Newcastle in the UCL on Wednesday. Uttering the name makes Guruzeta smile. It’s turning out to be a difficult season for Athletic, due in part to the pressures of being here. Losing in stoppage time in the weekend clash, they have won only one of their last eight matches and been defeated by Arsenal and the German side in Europe. However, consider the broader view, the major occasions he’s experienced and upcoming events, and a sense of thankful reflection about him.
In the 36 months since he had come back to Athletic, the striker has been a final four contender in Europe, prevented from reaching a domestic final by United, and has traveled on a traditional boat through the waterway surrounded by countless supporters after winning the Copa del Rey, the club’s first trophy in four decades. Now he is Athletic’s top scorer in the Champions League, where they are countercultural and making their first appearance in ten years. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.
Guruzeta thought it hard enough just to earn a spot and he was right. The son of the former Real Sociedad player Xabi Guruzeta and a dedicated fan at the club that are now his rivals, Guruzeta is a product of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that nurtured the coach, the former star and Andoni Iraola. He signed for Athletic at seventeen but after making his senior debut in the 2018 season, he experienced a ACL injury, dropped, a relegation and a recall before he could earn his place, making his comeback to enjoy the highlights of their lives.
“You go into the academy doubting you’ll make the senior squad but each step you progress through you’re still there and you can notice the proximity. You arrive and then … you’re sent away.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in six games between his debut and February 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games there and I tear my cruciate.
“A massive setback but I look back on it as a turning point because it made me change the way I saw things. Healing from a serious ailment is difficult, but it helps. You develop habits new to you. Previously I was casual, but I attended practice and then return home, typical youth behavior. In the facility, you have everything, so do everything. Work, precaution. Hit the weights. With hip imbalance, correct it. With decent ankle function, improve it more. All the minor details: execute them.
“In the first team you’re going to collide with opponents who have experienced contact repeatedly. Highly robust. Seeing previous pictures: I had slender legs. Thus incidents occur. Current photos and the change is dramatic. Recovery revealed that. Practice concludes, but further effort is needed. Peers are prepared, really ready; the same applies.”
Game time is essential. Guruzeta departed upset in that year, aged 23, moving to a lower level. With Sabadell in that season, he scored three times in forty appearances. During his Amorebieta stint in the following period, the goals started to flow. “Players go through it: loans, terminated contracts. If you turn it round, work, believe, and if one day the requirement appears in your position, a return could happen. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. To then win the Copa del Rey, compete continentally, and make the UCL … pfff.”
Understandably he remarks this is to be enjoyed. Especially after last year which, sometimes, was involved suffering. Previously the main threat with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
