The English golfer Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Playoff Battle Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed exceptional composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff after a rollercoaster last day of competition.
The Englishman sank a crucial birdie from around eight feet to seal the win, echoing his only previous Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a play-off win against Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Drama
Rai started the final round with a one-shot advantage over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 closing round that featured seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood moved one shot ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but his rival tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last hole.
Playoff Decider
This set up a play-off at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to take the title and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even better individual. To compete alongside him the last two days was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the current world No 30. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to put into words at the moment how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Other Contenders
Rory McIlroy left himself a bit too far to do, coming up a stroke behind in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 62 closing round of 62. It was his best-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and an eagle.
The Danish golfer fired six birdie putts of his as well, but his hopes of leading the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the 12th. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australian Hillier.
